LAKE MBURO NATIONAL PARK

Lake Mburo National Park is the smallest Savanna grassland National Park in Uganda that’s conveniently situated on the highway joining Kampala to Western Uganda in Nyabushozi county, Kiruhura District. Lake Mbura is set at an altitude between 1,220 metres to 1,828 meters in the rain shadows of Rwenzori mountains near to the Equator line covering 370 square kilometres of land area rich in bio-diversity, cultural experiences and scenic beauty. She lies in southern Ankole region approximately 228 km from Kampala Capital City in about 4 to 5 hours drive depending on the traffic. Lake Mburo National Park was officially gazetted as a national park in 1,983 after an upgrade to Game Reserve in 1,963 from a controlled hunting area in 1,933 that was occupied by the Banyankole Bahima pastoralists who largely depended on Ankole cattle keeping

LOCATION OF LAKE MBURO NATIONAL PARK:

Lake Mburo National Park lies on the highway joining Kampala to Western Uganda in Nyabushozi county, Kiruhura District within southern Ankole region bordered by other districts like Isingiro and Mbarara in the East approximately 228 km from Kampala Capital City in about 4 to 5 hours’ drive depending on the traffic. The short distance makes it the closest of all Uganda’s national park to Kampala capital city.

  • WILDLIFE:

Lake Mburo in Uganda is a home to numerous wildlife species of over 63 mammal species, 350 bird species, and reptiles and others. The numerous mammal species include the medium-sized antelopes with reddish-brown coat and white chest known as Impala that are only found in this park, Eland, klipspringer around rocky outcrops, warthog, African buffaloes, bushbucks, spotted hyenas, leopards, Rothchild’s Giraffe, waterbucks and herds of Zebras among more as well as Reptiles such as Hippos and Nile crocodiles together with other wildlife like vervet monkeys and olive baboons among others. Lake Mburo is situated approximately 228 km from Kampala Capital City in about 4 to 5 hours’ drive depending on the traffic by road. The short distance makes it the closest of all Uganda’s national park to Kampala capital city. It lies on the highway along Kampala – Mbarara route and by air, a flight from Entebbe Airport or Kajjansi Airfield and land in Mbarara Airstrip in about 1.5 hours then head to the park on road.

SEMULIKI VALLEY NATIONAL PARK:

Semuliki Valley National Park is situated in the western parts of Uganda particularly regions of Bundibugyo district in Bwamba County supporting two distinctive attractions that’s the unique birds and the two hot springs with the swampy surroundings. This valley tropical rainforest covers 220 square kilometres of land area in the Albertine Rift Valley with a gently slopy landform ranging between 670 metres to 760 metres above sea level and was initially gazetted as a Game Reserve in 1926 making it one of the oldest protected areas. Later in 1932, this land was designed into a forest reserve which upgraded to a National Park in October, 1993.

Location of Semuliki Valley National Park:

Semuliki lies in the western parts of Uganda in Bundibugyo district near the foothills of Mountain Rwenzori ranges sharing borders between Uganda south of lake Albert below the kijura Escarpment and Democratic Republic of Congo in the Albertine Rift Valley of Uganda. Semuliki is a home to the only true tropical lowland forests in East Africa with features of vast Ituri Forest, wetlands and bamboo containing diversity of wildlife species like over 400 bird species, 8 primate species, 63 mammal species, 300 butterfly species from both Central and East Africa.

Rwenzori Mountains National Park previously referred to as the Mountains of the Moon are situated in the Western Uganda in the Rwenzori Mountains on the border between Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo. The Rwenzori mountains comprise of six different mountains namely Stanley, Speke, Baker, Emin, Savioa and Gessi with a wide altitude range rising between 1,600 metres to 5,109 metres above sea level. Mountain Stanley’s Peak (Margherita) on Rwenzori mountains at 5,109 metres above sea level making it the highest mountain peak in Uganda and the third highest peak in Africa after Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. Rwenzori Mountains sit on 996 square kilometres in size covering areas of Bundibugyo, Kabarole and Kasese districts with numerous waterfalls, Lakes, and glaciers. It was established as a National Park in Uganda in 1,991 and later in 1,994 recognised as UNESCO World Heritage site. The explore to first discover and label Rwenzori Mountains on the world map was Henry Morton Stanley on 24th May, 1,888 and recorded it as Ruwenzori a local name to mean “Rainmaker” or “Cloud-King”.

LOCATION OF RWENZORI MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK:

Rwenzori Mountains National Park previously referred to as the Mountains of the Moon are situated in the Western Uganda in the Rwenzori Mountains on the border between Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo covering areas of Bundibugyo, Kabarole and Kasese districts. Rwenzori mountains are one of Africa’s most gorgeous mountain areas with the highest Peak (Margherita) in Uganda and third highest peak in Africa after Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya making it a beautiful destination to the world-class hikers and mountain climbers. These Mountains are made up of rocky blocks that were thrust up from the Western Rift Valley floor and higher than the Alps thereby supporting a variety of waterfalls, lakes, glaciers, flora and snowfields among. The Park is about 25 KM from Kasese Town and the mountain terrain are steep, cold and boggy making climbing a challenge that would take about 7 days or more to reach its summit with the help of the Local Bakonzo guides.

Mountain Rwenzori supports a diverse range of wildlife species such as about 18 mammal species, 217 bird species, 9 reptile species, and 6 amphibians among. Large mammals that reside in the forest zone of Rwenzori mountains National Park include African Forest Elephants, buffaloes, giant forest hogs, small antelopes called bushbucks, rare leopards, primates like the chimpanzees, blue monkeys, Rwenzori Colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, olive baboons among and an existence of endemic bird species like the black Eagle which hunts high up in the park, endangered Lammergeyers that soars overhead, Rwenzori Batis and Rwenzori turaco as well as reptiles like Three-horned chameleons among.

Activities In Mount Rwenzori National park

  • MOUNTAIN CLIMBLING:

Rwenzori Mountain terrains are steep, cold and boggy making climbing a challenge that would take about 7 days or more to reach its summit with the help of the Local Bakonzo guides. The Rwenzori mountains comprise of six different mountains namely Stanley, Speke, Baker, Emin, Savioa and Gessi with a wide altitude range rising between 1,600 metres to 5,109 metres above sea level. Mountain Stanley with the highest peak of 5,109 metres above sea level named Margherita offers a great opportunity for mountaineering, trekking, hiking, and climbing to the Margherita Peak and can be done along two trails that is the Central trail and Kilembe trail.

Through the longer route of Mbarara which is approximately 350KM in about 6 to 7 hour’s drive from Kampala through Masaka-Mbarara-Bushenyi to Kasese at Nyakalengija the Park headquarters. This route passes through Lake Mburo National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park offering spectacular views.

By Air, a flight can be arranged from Entebbe International Airport/Kajjansi Airfield to Kasese Airstrip in about 2.5 hours then a road drive to Nyakalengija park headquarters.

LOCATION OF MURCHISON FALLS NATIONAL PARK:

Murchison Falls National Park is located north-west of Uganda about 305KM away from Kampala Capital City in approximately 5 to 6 hours road drive depending on the traffic conditions along Kampala-Gulu Highway. Best Times to visit Murchison Falls National Park

The Park can be visited all year round though the best time to visit it in Uganda is during the dry season ie December to February ,June and July.

Dry Seasons;  December to February . During this time, they are fewer and less tourists making it easier to view animals in length of time and there are hardly any  mosquitoes in the park since its dry season thereby less chances of Malaria.

Dry Season ; June and July .This is the best weather timing in the park as the grass is short and temperatures are hotter then little rainfalls making it easy to spot wildlife hence making a visit worthy.

Wet Season; March to May , October to November. This time of the year in Uganda is a low season with heavy rains, animals hide and also the roads are impassible and the park is inaccessible though it’s the best time to do the resident bird-watching in the park.

Mountain Elgon National Park is a transboundary park the world’s biggest caldera mountain named after mountain Elgon an extinct volcano situated in the eastern parts of Uganda bordering Kenya. Mountain Elgon National Park is recognised as UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve with the highest point of Mountain Elgon Wagagai (4,321m) covering an entirely larger area in Uganda than Kenya and other peaks include Sudek (4,303m), Koitobo (4,222m), and Mubiyi (4,210m). Mountain Elgon National Park is unique as it’s straddlers borders between two countries each managing its share that’s Uganda covering approximately 1,140 square kilometres which was initially gazetted in 1992 and Kenya encompassing about 169 square kilometres which was much earlier gazetted in 1968.

Location of Mountain Elgon National Park:

Mountain Elgon National Park is a transboundary park situated in the eastern parts of Uganda sharing borders with Kenya though its largest part in Uganda. The Park was named after mountain Elgon which is believed to have initially erupted around 24 million years ago making it one of East Africa’s oldest geographical features extends its boundaries up to 1,145 square kilometres harbouring a variety of wildlife and bird species, diverse eco-system like tropical forests, afro-alpine moorland and bamboo.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the smallest National Park situated in Kisoro District the south-western part of Uganda bordering with the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in DR Congo covering an area of 33 square kilometers. The Park derives its name from a Kinyarwanda word “Gahinga” local term to mean piles of volcanic stones removed from farmlands at the foot of the volcanoes. Mgahinga was officially declared as a National Park in 1991 and is a home to over 80 mountain gorillas with only one habituated gorilla family called Nyakagezi which is handy for trekking as well as other unique primates known as the Golden monkeys. The Golden Monkeys can only be tracked in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda and also Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. The Park carries impressive features such as Lake Mutanda, the Mount Sabinyo and Mount Muhavura positioned in the Virunga Ranges sharing borders in Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo.

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION OF MGAHINGA:

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park lies in Kisoro District southwestern parts of Uganda stretching borders with Rwanda and DR Congo in area coverage of 33 square kilometers making it the smallest National Park in Uganda. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site listed, and approximately 510 KM from Kampala bordering Rwanda and DR Congo.

Mgahinga is the only destination harboring endangered mountain Gorillas other than Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in Uganda and Golden Monkeys other than Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda

Mgahinga is elevated at an altitude range between 2,227 meters near Ntebeko Park HQ to 4,127 meters on the summit of Mt. Muhavura above sea level. It is surrounded by 3 inactive volcanoes namely Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabyinyo and it’s part of the River Nile watershed area thereby making it a destination with impressive breathtaking landscapes.

GORILLA TREKKING

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one destination in Africa with a record of over 80 endangered mountain gorillas habituating only one transboundary gorilla group known as Nyakagezi gorilla family handy for trekking. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park usually allows gorilla trekking to start in the early morning with a briefing at the Park Headquarters and a group of trekkers led by a professional guide will hit the jungle which will take about 30 minutes to 7 hours to spot mountain gorillas after shall be granted at an hour of close interaction with mountain gorillas in their natural habitats. During trekking other primates, birds and plant species among can be spotted.

Mount Gahinga is the smallest volcano and hiking it takes about 6 hours to reach the top from Bamboo Forest. At the top of the summit, you will find a crater filled with swamp and great lobelia.

Kidepo Valley National Park is the most vivid isolated national park situated on 1,442 square kilometres featuring uneven vast savanna grassland in the semi-arid regions of Karamoja in the north-eastern segment of Uganda bordering Kenya in just 5KM to the east and South Sudan in the north-west. Kidepo Valley National Park is the least explored park by tourists given a bearing of its distant location from the Kampala Capital City that’s about 700km faraway though now accessible by road and air transportation. It was officially declared as a National Park in 1962, and this was the same time Uganda as a country gained its independence.

Kidepo Valley National Park is Uganda’s third largest national park hosting about 77 mammal species in these are the 20 different predator species like the Lions, Leopards, Elephants, Buffaloes, spotted hyenas and giraffes among more as well as the only wild Ostrich population in Uganda and an encounter of about 475 bird species such as the purple heron, Jackson’s hornbills, chestnut weavers, secretary bird among more.

LOCATION:

Kidepo Valley National Park is situated approximately 700KM from Kampala Capital City in the semi-arid regions of Karamoja in the Kaboong district near Karenga within the north-eastern segment of Uganda bordering Kenya and South Sudan. Kidepo Valley is set upon a given altitude of 2,750 metre above sea level which is the highest point of Mount Morungole from 914 metres at Narus valley and Kidepo riverbeds. Kidepo Valley National Park is a home to about 77 mammal species of which 20 mammal species are predators among which are the big four animals from The Big Five Animals that’s to say big numbers of Lions, Elephants, Leopards, and buffaloes which are occasionally spotted in any other park than Kidepo. Kibale Forest National Park is substantially ever-green tropical rainforest lying on 795 square kilometers in area width in the Western parts of Uganda particularly near Fort Portal town. The beautiful moist ever-green tropical rain-forests with grassland vegetation importantly influencing the weather conditions gives sanctuary to about 70 mammal species, some of which are the impressive 13 primate species foremost the families of chimpanzees. There is an estimation of 1,500 chimpanzees making it Uganda’s largest chimpanzee population and other notable primates include the Bushbaby ( creature of the night ) and the Potto that are  normally spotted during guided night walks in the rainforest and the other primate species include red-tailed monkeys , olive Baboons (keep your meal and bag safe ), blue monkeys, L’Hoest monkeys, galagos, grey-cheeked mangabeys, vervet monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys. The chimpanzees are in  habituated groups that can be tracked with a professional ranger guide at Kanyanchu River Camp.

  Kibale Forest National Park is also  regarded as the Primate capital of the world because of it’s diverse concentration of primates in Africa and in the world at large. It is a popular destination for birders as the park asserts about 325 bird species like the Olive long-tailed cuckoo, African Grey parrot, and western tinker bird among more.

Location: 

Kibale Forest National Park is situated in Western Uganda and it’s shared by (four) 4 districts that’s to say Kabarole, Kamwenge, Kyenjojo, and Kasese but largely in Kabarole district. It is about 348 km ( 5 hours drive ) from Kampala and about  26 km southwest of Fort Portal city ( Tourism City ) and it adjoins Queen Elizabeth National Park to the south and Semliki National park to the north.

Kabale Forest National Park was found in 1993 and it’s set on an altitude of 1590 meters.

MAJOR ATTRACTIONS IN KIBALE:

  1. Primates and wildlife;

Kibale Forest National Park concentrates on a wide range of animal species , about 70 mammals which include  13 different primate species making it the world’s primate capital, 375 birds, floral species and other animals. The impressive list of the 13 primate species include; red-tailed monkeys, 1500 chimpanzees , olive Baboons (keep your meal and bag safe ), blue monkeys, L’Hoest monkeys, galagos, grey-cheeked mangabeys, vervet monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys. The other animals that survive in the park include bushbucks, bush pigs, Bush Elephants, warthogs, Leopards, African golden Cats, Otters, Forest hogs, mongoose, buffaloes, and many more.

The main tourists attraction being the Chimpanzees where chimpanzee trekking starts at Kanyanchu Tourist Center and it’s conducted by a professional ranger guide guaranteeing  an unforgettable experience with the intelligent primates in their beautiful rich habitats for at least an hour of sight and interactions.

  1. Birds;

Kibale Forest National Park is a popular destination of bird spieces hosting about 375 birds  particularly the forest bird spieces and the endemic. The Park hosts specifically 4 unique bird spieces that are only found in this park, these include the blue-headed bee-eaters, Cassin’s spine tails, Masked apalis and the Nahan’s francolins , blue turacos, Rose turacos. These you will find no whereelse than Kibale, isn’t that very beautiful?

Other bird residents that survive in Kibale include African green breasted pittas, blue breasted kingfishers, tropical boubou, slender billed weaver’s , Grey parrots, red chested owlets, little greenbul, superb sunbird , purple breasted sunbirds and among more. These can be best sighted during the wet season in Uganda that’s March to May and October through November

Chimp Trekking

Kibale Forest National Park regarded as the primates capital of the world hosts about 1500 chimpanzees that enhances chimpanzee tracking .Kanyanchu being the main tourism centre in Kibale,it’s where the Chimpanzees are tracked and the habituation starts with a great breifing conducted by a professional forest ranger guide . The trekking takes about 2 to 4 hours inclusive of the one hour close interraction experience.

Kibale Chimpanzee trekking requires early valid permit booking of about Usd 250 per person for foreign  non-resident citizens, Usd 200 for foreign residents and Shs 180,000 for all East African citizens inclusive of Ugandans.

 

Chimpanzee Habituation

Kibale Chimpanzee Habituation is mainly  for the tourists that would love to spend more time with the chimpanzees probably a full-day or half-day trying to learn, understand and observe how they behave, stay and feed. This movement is in accompany of a professional experienced forest ranger guide and there is Lunch meals organised for the tourists in the forest hence Lunch in the forest.

Kibale Chimpanzee Habituation requires an early valid Permit booking and each permit costs Usd 300 foreign non residents  and  250 usds  for foreign residents well as East African residents pay Ug Shs. 250,000 per person with Ugandans included.

  • Bird watching;

Kibale hosts a wide range of bird population both endemic and forest bird species making it an idea stop for birders. The park has an impressive list of about 335 forest birds, swamp and grassland spieces including the 4 bird species  endemic to only Kibale. Some of the beautiful bird species include the purple breasted sun birds, African green breasted pittas, black-necked weavers, red-capped robins, among.

Kibale is adjacent to Bigodi Wetland, a popular destination for birders hosting a total of 138 bird spieces . Bigodi Wetland features peculiar birds like the great blue turacos, the primates such as the nocturnal bush babies, red colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys

  • Cultural Expendition;

Kibale Forest National Park is situated in the Kabarole district, a place occupied by a number of Batooro and Bakiga. An interaction with these tribes gives an insight of their traditional and cultural practices and many more.

  • Bush- Craft Children;

These are beautiful activities that can be conducted whilst the parents are doing chimpanzee tracking in the Forest flavouring children age group of 5 to 15 years. During the games, the children are in position to explore floral species, butterflies, primates and birds.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a diverse tropical rainforest situated in south-western Uganda covering the districts of Kisoro, Kabale, and Kanungu in border with DR Congo at the foot of the Albertine Rift. It is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its global eco-system and it’s a home to a bigger number of endangered mountain gorillas in the world of about 50 gorilla families inclusive of the 25 mountain gorillas that are habituated starting with the Mubare Gorilla Group which was first to be habituated for Tourism in April 1,993 in Uganda. The word “Bwindi” means “Darkness” and the Park name was derived after the Thick Impenetrable Tropical Rainforests lying between an altitude of 1,190 meters to 2,607 meters protecting about 120 mammal species including large mammals like Chimpanzees, Baboons, Elephants, forest antelopes among, over 350 bird species featuring 23 Albertine Rift endemics such as African green broadbill and Shelley’s crimson wing, over 200 butterfly species, reptiles and amphibians.

LOCATION OF THE PARK:

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a diverse tropical rainforest situated in south-western Uganda covering the districts of Kisoro, Kabale, and Kanungu in border with DR Congo at the foot of the Albertine Rift amidst the green slopes of Kigezi. It was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1,994 for its global eco-system, rich faunal, floral and avifaunal species. Bwindi covers an area of 331 square kilometers which was established in 1,991 primarily to host the endangered Mountain Gorillas.

ATTRACTIONS IN BWINDI IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK:

  • MOUNTAIN GORILLAS

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that protects an estimate of over 459 endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitats making it half of the world’s mountain gorilla population with a comprise of 25 habituated families of mountain gorillas which are open for tracking in Ruhija, Buhoma, and Nkuringo areas.

  • BIRDS IN BWINDI

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has a record of over 350 bird species comprising of 23 Albertine Rift endemics such as African green broadbill and Shelley’s crimson wing, and the forest species. The most common bird species include handsome francolin, short-tailed warblers, Chapin’s flycatchers, Archer’s robin chat, African wood owl, Western green tinker bird, Doherty’s bush shrike, Kivu ground thrush, red-throated alethe, African swallowtail, great blue turacos Cream-banded swallowtail,  regal sunbird, Standard-winged nightjars, and others.

  • FLORAL AND FAUNAL SPECIES IN BWINDI:

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park consists of a wide variety of floral and faunal species in East Africa. The Floral species of over 210 tree species including the African Mahogany which grows taller, over 100 fern species, more than 1,000 flowering plants and the different vegetations like Bamboo. The Faunal species comprises of above 120 mammal species like the Chimpanzees, antelopes, forest Elephants, jackals among, more than 350 bird species including African green broadbill and Shelley’s crimson wing and forest species, over 200 butterfly species such as African giant’s swallowtail and cream-banded swallowtail, the reptiles and amphibians as well as the primates like the mountain gorillas, black and white colobus monkeys and Olive Baboons.

Activities In Bwindi Imepentrable Forest National park

 GORILLA TREKKING

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to over 459 endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitats which is literally half of the world’s mountain gorilla population remaining hence Gorilla Trekking as the top adventurous activity in Bwindi. The dry season is the best time to visit Bwindi in month of June to August, and December to February, because during wet rainy seasons, the trekking is challenging since trails are muddy and vegetation is longer.

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi is usually conducted in the early morning hours where a group of tourists is briefed and led by a professional experienced tour ranger into the forest in search for Gorillas. The trekking normally takes between 2 to 6 active hours for 95% chance to sight gorillas in the wild. The Gorilla Families to visit in Bwindi include Rwigi, Kahungye, Bikingi, Mucunguzi, Mishaya, Bitukura, Mubare, Kyaguriro, Oruzongo, Nkuringo, Bushaho, Bweza, Kutu, Rushegura, Christmas among more.       

Kindly note that Gorilla trekking requires a permit which has to acquired earlier before the day of trekking.

GORILLA HABITUATION IN BWINDI:

Gorilla Habituation is where tourists are granted more time to spend with the habituated mountain gorilla families for close to a day with at least 4 hours of close interaction in the wild and even lunch is heard in the forest. Gorilla Habituation is the process that gradually exposes a wild gorilla group to humans until they accept human visit and communication. The habituated gorillas are less exposed to humans hence they go through habituation process for about 2 years less or more, than the gorilla families seen during a gorilla trekking though the gorilla habituation experience is safe and tourists can learn about the gorilla behaviors and social dynamics. The Nkuringo Gorilla Family was the first family to be habituated in the southern parts of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Rushaga area.

The best season to do Gorilla Habituation in Uganda is in the dry season that is to say June to Mid-September and December to February.

   BIRD WATCHING IN BWINDI

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park consists of many bird species of over 350 bird species featuring the 23 Albertine Rift endemics and endangered species such as African green broadbill, Shelley’s crimson wing, Grauer’s Warbler, Short-tailed Warbler, Chapin’s Flycatchers and other bird species like the Western green tinker, Rwenzori Batis, Flycatchers, and Cinnamon-chested bee-eater many more.

The main bird watching spots in Bwindi include Bamboo Zone, Mubwindi Swamp Trail and Waterfall Trail.

  • NATURE WALKS IN BWINDI

Bwindi has about six main trails in Buhoma region that’s Bamboo trail, Ivy River Trail, Kashasha River Trail, Mubwindi Swamp Trail, Muzabajiro Loop Trail and the Habinyanja Trail offering great opportunity to enjoy the tranquility of the forest on foot and feel the real experience.

  • CYCLING

Bwindi offers a variety of cycling trails that are beginner-friendly and exciting to experienced bikers. Cycling in Bwindi takes about 3 hours of guided bicycle-ride through the forest exploring the local communities encountering birds. Cycling in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park follows well- maintained trail from the park at Buhoma Trail to Ivi River.

BATWA EXPERIENCE
Batwa People are traditional people who originally lived in the Bwindi Impenetrable forests till in 1,991 when the Park was officially reserved in Uganda. Since 1991, the Batwa people were sent away from the forests of Bwindi though still conduct Batwa Trails where they take tourists to the forest teaching them about Batwa People, storytelling, demonstrations and hikes to the villages.

BEST TIME TO VISIT BWINDI IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK:

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is available for visitation all year round though the best time is during the dry season in Uganda. The Dry season in Uganda has 2 major phases that’s to say the long dry season in the months of June, July, August and early September as well as the short dry season in the months of December, January, and February. During the dry season, Bwindi impenetrable National Park experiences less rains, clear bright blue skies and sunny days with less mosquito attacks making the trails in Bwindi less slippery and easy to walk through leading to high chances of taking beautiful gorilla photos and other primates’ photos with clearer views. The wet season in Bwindi is ideal for birding.

By Road, Bwindi can be accessed from Kampala to Kabale along Masaka – Mbarara Highway to Kabale, Kanungu to Buhoma or it can be reached from Queen Elizabeth National Park through Mweya in about 165 km approximately 3 hours’ drive or 65 Km from Ishasha.

By Air, Bwindi can be reached by taking a flight from Entebbe Airport/Kajjansi Airfield to Kisoro Airstrip or Kihihi Airstrip. The Park is divided into 2 sectors that’s northern sector and southern sector, Kisoro arrival is best for the southern sector of the park in Rushaga and Nkuringo well as Kihihi arrival is best for the northern sector in Buhoma and Ruhija.

The Park is an open vast savannah bio-sphere conservation area with plenty of thrilling safari activities such as wildlife featuring grassland, acacia woodland, forests, wetlands, euphoria tress, swamps, open water sustaining a wide range of mammals and birds species and it adjoins the forested Kyambura Gorge/Wildlife reserve, Maramagambo Forest, the snow-capped Rwenzori mountains and the Kibale Forest National Park.

LOCATION

Queen Elizabeth National Park is located in the western parts of Uganda 410km southwest of Kampala about 7 to 8 hours drive . The Park lies on 1,978 km wide spread at the base of the western arm of the great African rift valley and its boarders extend covering the neighbouring districts of Kamwenge, Kasese, Rubirizi and Rukungiri. Queen Elizabeth National Park is precious blessed with abundant wildlife, breath-taking sceneries and birds.
  • Wildlife;The Park holds over 95 large beautiful mammals, 620 bird species, 10 species of primates, reptiles and amphibians. Some of the animals to sight during a safari include topis, spotted hyenas, waterbucks, warthogs, crocodiles, cape buffaloes, African Elephants, tree-climbing lions, Leopards, jackals, hippos among more. These animals can be spotted during game-drives during the morning hours and evenings like the Mweya game drive or fresh boat-cruise along the Kazinga channel that connects Lake Edward and Lake George. There are approximately 5,000 hippos, 2,500 Elephants, and 10,000 Buffaloes but there are no Rhinos. The presence of large cats like the tree-climbing Lions that are found in the Ishasha area, hiding Leopards and the chimpanzees in the Kyambura gorge with the extension of the Maramagambo forest where Baboons usually exist (ensure your bags are safe) as well as diversity in the bird species.

  • Birds :Queen Elizabeth N/Park is home to a number of about 620 bird species that dwell in the park like the shoebill stork, slender-tailed morning doves, African skimmers, African fish Eagles, Open-billed stork, African white-tailed larks, malachite kingfisher, African Jacanas, white-winged terns, black-headed gonoleks, Pied Kingfishers, Verreaux’s eagle-owl, pin-tailed whydahs, Egyptian goose, swamp fly-catcher, collard pratincole, pink-backed pelicans, African fin foot, blue-breasted bee-eaters, emerald cuckoo, western banded snake eagle, red-collared widowbird, white -browed coucal, chocolate-backed kingfishers, black-chested snake eagles, pelican and flamingos,  the list is end-less enhancing bird watching either during a game drive, boat-cruise, nature walks among more.

Game drives

In Queen Elizabeth N/park, there’s more to the morning and evening drives than you can imagine. The beautiful views of wildlife like the tree-climbing Lions usually found in the Ishasha region, Uganda kobs, African bush Elephants, spotted hyenas (usually during evening hours), Cape Buffaloes, bushbucks, waterbucks, warthogs and birds etc are present during the game-drives.

Kazinga Channel Boat cruise 

A fresh Kazinga Boat is usually done on the Kazinga Channel, this is the intercession between Lake Edward and Lake George in queen Elizabeth national park giving tourists a great view of the aquatic species such as water birds, wide number of hippos and crocodiles. Birding

Queen Elizabeth N/Park is the most visited destination and recognised among the most significant areas of bird watching in Uganda. The Park gives prominence to incredible birding spots like the Kazinga channel, Kyambura gorge, kasenyi plains and craters. BEST TIMES TO VISIT THE PARK:

The dry season is the best time to tour Queen Elizabeth National Park wildlife and its natural rich beauties in Uganda. This season ranges from early June to early September and December through February. The Park usually is more spectacular during the wet season that’s March, April, May, and October through to November.

By air, there are always scheduled flights to be booked connecting tourists from Entebbe airport or Kajjansi airfield to Mweya or Kasese airstrip.
